Scene Analysis
Lost in Translation
(Sophia Coppola)
August, 2010
Lost in Translation marks Sofia Coppola's second directorial effort, following The Virgin Suicides, and it's just about on par with that film. The two movies share a dreamy quality and relaxed pace that you're either going to love or hate; with the right mindset, there's no doubt that Lost in Translation has the potential to come off as a tremendously moving human drama.
The film content about two people from America in Japan: Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a popular American actor in town to shoot a high-paying whiskey commercial advertisement, while Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is the bored wife of a famous photographer who's killing time by decorating her hotel room. Both characters spend a lot of time in the hotel's bar, where the two finally talk with each other. They began to get to know each other through various excursions outside of the hotel, become good friends, and spent happy time together in Tokyo.
I really like this part just as many people like. It is really funny and comic, even there is something like melancholy, heavyhearted or dejected in this movie, Sophia Coppola still put some comedy part and dialogue in.
*Focus on
1.   DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS
-         Scene Duration:
00:08:29 – 00:11:47
-         Mise-en-scene
In the daytime, this is a busy studio which located in one of the tall buildings in Tokyo, Japan. The scene is about doing advertising, from dressing up, ready to go to a process, and communication between the director, translator and the main actor. We can see the scene of the predominant color to yellowish. The director used a long shot, and close - up, even extreme close - up. Bob wearing a black suit with a glass of whisky, director and staff dress the more casual, and Miss translator wearing more official. About sound here, mostly it is soft music, and director’s voice, busy talking, and Miss translator‘s confusing translations, plus Bob ‘s actor’s lines.
-         Color Usage
The main color is bright yellow, followed by whiskcy, they are the same color serial, and similar with each other. In my opinion, the ad for whiskey is most about gentle and cultural, it is exactly identical with the color yellow that makes people comfortable and blend into the scene. On the other hand, the soft lighthard work and communication between the dialogue, formed a striking contrast. Then, even if it is noisy, the audience would not think it is noisy. And quiet environment and light music for the background will not make people feel a dull and uncomfortable.
-         Sound
In this scene, mostly using the sound diagetic method, there are character talking which including director’s busy talking about the advertisement to Bob even he cannot understand, Miss translator’s stupid translation, and Bob’s dialogue, and music playing in the scene is really soft music followed whisky ad.
-         Dialogue
The highpoint of this part is dialogue between director, translator and Bob, even director talked many words, translator just said less word to Bob, and after Bob’s short sentence, translator can say many words to director, it is so funny. What is really fun is Bob’s innocent and confusing face, and director’s exciting and passionate speech, I swear anyone will laugh when they see this comic scene. and this is the reason that I write down the script in this scene analysis here. See, the Director says a few long sentences in Japanese, “He wants you to turn, look in camera and say the lines,” the translator said, she just use few words to translate those long sentences. And this situation works for the whole translation.
-         Music
Sorry I didn’t find the name of background music, but I know that is soft music, just as background music which is smaller than director’s dialogue.
-         Contrasting Areas
At the beginning, the main color is white, and it is really clear with comparing with the black suit of characters. Later, the scene's color is soft yellow, and the advertisement is for whiskey. So it is a very elegant, the whole scheme for people is morbidezza and comfortable.
-         Lighting
There is a soft yellow lighting along scene, I think it is most important because this is a whiskey advertisement, you know, whiskey color is also yellow. Talking about yellow, we will think about gentle, royalty, happiness or warm. And, it is identical with the manner of speaking of Bob. Compare with sound, you may not feel noisy, because soft light and busy talking come out together.
2. CHARACTER NANLYSIS
-         Character Relationships
The main characters are the director who is the most talkative person in the scene, the translator who is doing translation and Bob, the actor of whiskey advertisement. Then, director is directing the advertisement, and Bob is advertising, but director and Bob cannot speak same language, so they need a translator who is the lady at the middle of them.
-         Character Movements
The characters’ movements are not main focus in this scene. As we can see, the director moves rapidly from one side to the other side, and moves closer to Bob. The translator, moves to director when she talks to director, and moves to Bob when she has to talk to Bob. About Bob, he just sits down the chair with the glass cup.
-         Timing
7-10 seconds for each advertises, around 30seconds for director’s talking. Translator spends about 4s to translate to Bob, and 8s for director.
-         Editing Style
Editing uses many short sequences to be completed. It should be that always got mistakes and director always cut and correct it, especially when they don’t have same languages. And in this scene they need translate, then the translate part which is funny can be emphasized. It raised more fun for audience.
-         Transitions
There is no cross-fade in the scene, only jump-out used. When the camera skips straight from Bob to director or the translator, it always jumps and jumps. The purpose is keep speed with characters’ talking.
-         Shot types
It is a close-up and extreme close-up shot mix. Because close-up shot can see characters’ activities, and extreme close-up shot shows us the characteristics of characters, for instance, we can see that Bob’s expression is really innocent, he couldn’t understand but has no choice.
-         Camera Angle
At the beginning it used over the shoulder view, in other shots just used normal camera views what is straight on. I think over the shoulder view used is to change shot to advertising shot, then fade in, let us into advertising shot.
-         Camera Movement
Pan left, Pan right, zoom in, Tracking shot, these are camera movement used in this scene. It used pan left, pan right and tracking shot to trace characters’ talking. When Bob said actor’s lines, the zoom in movement is used to emphasize his characteristics. And the camera moves to follow director when he was saying something.
-         Depth of Field
In this scene, no foreground or background is used in focus, just follow the normal sequence to direct.
-         Total Composition
Showing a fun moment is using much more dialogues and characters’ behaviors, the director shakes hands rapidly and talks fast to indicate his meaning. Translator makes interesting translation with her speaking and action. Bob, the main character shows different expressions in his specific way.
-         Subtext
We watch it for fun, but most of all, we also can know that Bob is not popular at all, he cannot find any funny in this career, and he is not happy. As an actor, Bob has no choice to satisfy director’s requirement. With translator’s poor help, he still doesn’t know how to do with ad, and couldn’t communicate with director as well. Under these external factors, it demonstrated deeply that Bob is just a poor and unhappy guy in his life.
Two peoples in this strange city are very unpleasant, then they came together, and began to a romantic tour, the whole narrative framework is the typical mode of Hollywood which including the beginning, development, highpoint and the end. Director arranged for a series of small plot in the army. It may be joke or some funny stuff. In the film, the small plot was trivial for the whole narrative between the skeleton in the small plot, no excessive. However, the story itself is meaningful. This sense is making films themselves have a more profound mind, at the heart, not the flitting seasons of the plot by plot, but the variety of thinking.

 The Virgin Suicides

Descriptive analysis:
Duration: 00:24:20-00:27:16
Mise-in-scene: Actress: Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary and Therese .
Actors:  Parkie,  Tim, Kevin and Paul
Overview: In this scene, Firstly, you can see the boys are trying to read Cecilia’s diary. Of course they are happened in the boys really life. Then the camera changes to Cecilia,  she is reading her own diary, and next moment some of  the things happen in this scene are real , some are do not really, they are just Cecilia’s imagination. the boys are trying to collect  the souvenirs of the Lisbon girl, they just do not understand why Cecilia suicides. So they are trying to figure out why. Finally they find a  diary  written by Cecilia. They find out many things are written on the diary. The boys begin to know something about the girls.  Even through Just a little thing, they found the imprisonment of being a girl, which made the girls’ mind dreamy.
Stage:  in the middle part of this scene tells us some happy moment happened to the girls. The girls are go boating and see whales. This  is a simulation of a real place, built by the camera crew. This is a stage which let us know Cecilia is really dreamy, they are boating is really happened in the girls’ life but then they are dancing and laughing in the wild  are not really, and they are just imagination.
Colours:  in the most part of this movie, they use orange. The color is important . Here are two reasons.  Firstly orange means old, means something happens in the old time or memories. You can find out that the movie tells us a story which happened  about   twenty five years  ago. They are memories. So the color are old. Secondly, orange means depressing and tragedy. Of course,  this movie is a tragedy, five beautiful young girls are suicide.
Sound and music:
Music play in the scene: There are several pieces of music. Firstly,
when the boy is reading the dairy written by Cecilia, there is no music When the scene changes to the girls, changes to the imagination of the Cecilia , the music  comes out and becomes louder and louder . The music is sad, confused, miss and heavy.  The music makes the whole scene heavy. The music must be want to let us feel sad about imagination of Cecilia, feel  the boys are confused, miss and upset  about the girl.
Dialogue: Firstly, a middle-aged man is reading the aside, a middle- aged man reading a story about young girls and boys.  For the most part, the story must come from the memories of the middle-aged man. Then the boys are reading Cecilia’s diary one by one.  They must be very curious what have written on the diary.  Cecilia begin to read. What Cecilia is reading must be what the girls like and what the girls what’s to happen in their short life.
Contrasting areas:  when the scene comes to Cecilia is writing something about  Lux, we can see Lux is in a daze, which is the foreground of the picture,  the background is the wild, but the foreground much more visible than the background. The contrasting areas make us concentrate on Lux not the background.
Character relationships: Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary and Therese are Lisbon sisters. They are very close.
Parkie, Tim, Kevin and  Paul  are the boys  live around the Lisbon,  they also like the Lisbon sisters.
Lux is throwing the leaves of a beautiful flower, she must is thinking something happy, or she have some beautiful and wishful dreams.
Cecilia is writing, she must a sensitive girl, and she love the life because she want  to right down all almost  all the things happened in her life.
When Parkie is reading, he use him finger point out where he is reading, he must be very interested in what he is reading  want  to show what he is reading to his friends.
Tim is reading, when he find something about the girls, he put his hand in front of his heart. He must be feel very sorry for what happened to the Cecilia.
Character movement: Characters do not move in the scene or move off the scene.
Editing
Time/Editing Style: most of the duration of the shots  are very short, they are two seconds or three seconds.  When the scene show us boys are reading Cecilia’s diary , the shots are short, they editor must be want to show us exactly how the boys interested the diary, the boys really want to read the diary so the can’t wait for the reading from their friends. When scene show us the girls, the shot is shot, they editor must be want to show us how happy are they when they are hanging out. Maybe the things are not really happen.
Transition: In this scene, the editor uses many cross-fade.  there are two reasons. Firstly, for some shots,  they have a connection between two shots. The later shot comes  from  the diary. The late shot do not really happen in the boys’ life. Secondly, for some shots, the things do not even happen in the girls life , they happened in the girls dream. They are not real.
Cinematography
Shot type: In this scene, they use Extreme Close-up, not only we can see the eye clearly. But also the editor want give prominence to the eyes, a pair of blurred and sad eyes.
they use close-up, of course we can see the girl clear,  we find the girl is beautiful, but she is very sad, not suitable with her age.
They use medium shot. The editor do not only want to show us that  Cecilia is writing,  but also want us concentrate on the background. The girl is writing diary in the wild, it’s a romantic thing. The girl must be very happy. This kind of thing  does not happen in  Cecilia’s  life, but  she like it.
Camera angle:
Over the shoulder: so that people could see what happened in front of the shoulder. When Parkie is reading the editor want to show us the other boys are interested in the reading, so the editor use the camera angle-over the shoulder, want to show us what happened in the other boys face.
High angle: so that people could see clearly what have happened under the shoulder. When the shot show us the girls go boating and  Lux touch the whales, the high angle can show us what exactly happened to Lux.
Camera movement: In this scene, the camera do not move .
All the shots people could see are what the diary been written, the shots  are not real been seen, they are just imagination. So the shots are cut into pieces, just like the memories in pieces.
Depth of field: The sequence is used very well in this scene, sometimes, the whole scene is clear, we can see clear what happened in the scene. Sometimes the scene use blur, the background is blur, because the editor want us concentrate on the foreground.
Deconstructed meaning:  All in all, in this scene, the boys are trying to finger out why Cecilia suicides. This scene comes out after Father Moody come to Lisbon’s house. The boys are feel sorry about  the suicide of Cecilia , so they try to find out why the young girl suicide. But before this scene, the girl’s parents just do not know why their own girl suicides, and they do nothing. The two scene must be contradistinctive.

Analysis
Memento
Director: christopher Nolan
Genre: Crime Drama Mystery Thriller
Synopsis: A man got one condition that can’t make any new memory, but he want to get revenge for his wife, he can only get memory from photos tattoo, and notes he write for himself, how to find and kill the right person under this condition, you’ll see in this movie.

Duration: Time: 2.50-----3.50
Mise-en-scene: Lenny and Teddy both show up during this period, and Teddy was dead at the beginning, the situation is Lenny hold a gun to shoot Teddy in a dark room.

Colors: At the beginning is color, after playing back the scene Lenny killed Teddy, change to black and white. Color one start first, during that time, we can see definitely something happened between Lenny and Teddy, and we would curious why he killed Teddy, then color change to black white. Lenny start to talk about himself, then we start getting some information to understand the plot.

Sound: For the color one at the beginning, silence first, then we can hear some mystery music, but just for a very short time, then change to the black and white one, we can hear the monologue of Lenny.

Dialogue: for the color one at first, no any dialogue, but for the black and white part, there was some monologue from Lenny. Then when the color change back to the color, some dialogue between the reception man, and then Lenny shows up, he start talking with Lenny.

Edit: playback, jump cut and the fade transition for changing black and white to color, and almost all the cut used jump cut, and the playback make audience feel intersting and curious about the movie.

Camera: close up, on shoulder, extreme close up, and use the low camera angle, the extream close up for the bullet, gun ,and glasses with blood, just few simple stuff show that someone dead by shot. And the high camera angle for shooting Lenny was lying on the bed of the motel.

Analysis of this peirod: This is the beginning of the movie, so the director are supposed to make audience understand some basic things, first, the color one, Teddy was dead at the beginning, but some playback tell that this is the end or, not happened yet, and then jump cut to the black and white, through the monologue, we can tell Lenny didn’t know what’s going on at all, he was totally lost, and he didn’t know how long he had been stayed at the motel, then the color changed back, Lenny was talking to the reception man, and according to the dialogue, we can see Lenny got some kind of condition, through the picture of Teddy and note on the picture, that can tell Teddy and Lenny are not very familiar or Teddy got some memory problem. And then, Lenny didn’t know if he had told Teddy about his condition or not, that’s more like memory problem. All this setting pave the way for the plot of this movie. Through this one minute, maybe we’re still confused, but all the suspense left to the audience makes people want to know what would happen next. And we can see Lenny killed Teddy at the beginning, obviously, there was something wrong between them, but when Lenny walked out from the motel, they are together and it seems like they are friends, though Lenny didn’t remember Teddy at all, he showed the photo of Teddy to the reception man, and then Teddy shows up, but when Lenny saw him, he was a little bit confused, we would wonder why Lenny got one photo of Teddy, but he can’t remember him at all. And what would happen that lead lenny kill teddy. Tow main character shows up in this one minutes, and the director explained the conflict would happen between these tow man , and at the end , one die, the audience would starting wondering the plot, and become interested in the film, especially for the ending, people would ask what kind of movie it is, and what condition Lenny got, and this condition brings what ending to Lenny, a lot of questions set up in this one minutes, so it’s a good beginning for got audience attention, the proportion between question and answers was in a good balance, the audience got some information and also more questions. So as I mentioned before, we can tell christopher Nolan is pretty good at set the plot for audience, a man lost his memory and with a lot of questions on him and he is even confusing about himself, but his purpose is get revenge for his wife, how ridiculous it is, and through his tattoo we can realise that he definetly got something to do and he can’t forget it, that’s why he put these thing on his body, No doubt about it, he is a question, and through the conversation between Lenny and the reception man, we can tell though Lenny can’t remember what happened, he knows what kind of condition he is in. And while he was showing the picture of Teddy, teddy showed up, then we can’t help thinking why he killed the Teddy at the first scene, cause at that time, they were just like friends, and we would also start thinking what kind of person Teddy is, is he the murder? Or Lenny killed the wrong person, the director make those tow main charactors show up in this one minute, but just in one minute, he introduce how mysterious lenny is, and make us think whether Teddy is good or bad person, why at the beginning, he was killed by lenny, this is a big suspense for audience, and the more intersting part is how a man who is under this condition can find the murder and got revenge for his wife, cause he even can’t remember anything and anyone new. The excellent part for the beginning part is the director introduce the charactors and set up a lot of questions at the same time. And anothing is the director divide the movie into two part, one is black and white, another is color. Maybe it would confuse us at the beginning, but after you watching the whole movie, you will find this is one clever part for this movie, the black and white part tell the story clockwisely, and the color one goes anti-clockwise, then you can easily find which scene fit which one.

I. SCENE OVERVIEW

It’s the front part of this movie, during long time to staying at the car, finally, Bob arrival the hotel. The director uses very smart way to snow how Bob’s mood. Bob stand in the back of a crowded elevator surrounded by Japanese businessmen below his shoulders.

The elevator stops at the 50th floor and the doors open onto the massive, streamline lobby of the Park Hyatt.

Bob follows the JAPENESE BUSINESSMEN out into the marble and glass lobby that frames the view of Tokyo.

The CONCIERGE and several eager HOTEL MANAGERS greet Bob. He just wants to sleep, but more STAFF continues to greet him, ask him about his fright. They lead him to reception.

II. SHOT ANALYSIS

Shot 1: 40 Seconds

Sounds : there is no sounds effets

Shot Size: short shot to close shot
Contrast Dominants: This shot demonstrated the man first time come to Japan. By his action we can feel his Psychological activity.

Camera Movement: At the beginning, while the character in the elevator .The camera move is it stationary. And then the camera is movement, the type of movement is that is it t tracking motion .Is the motion panning. The camera move to follow the characters.

Depth of Field:
There are too quite envirvonment in this lift. This scene has been built by four shots, the shots focus on people’s face, that audience can catch or guess the some information at the beginning of movie straight way. All of Japanese was looks normal, maybe they thinking about some business, however, Bob was looks tired more than the other people. In this case, during this lift which is a narrowness space, Bob was in this crowded space, he just want to this lift didn’t stop, let him have a rest, during this scenes, Sofia Coppola make 7 seconds on it , is a quite long shot used on this not very important shot ,however ,just this lots of details to give accidence understand how tired and loneness he is .

Shot2 :
Sounds: assistant’s voice
Camera angle: close shot

Depth of Field: This is the first scene of the movie, why director put this scene here? Because Bob is in another country, director wants use this family letter to express Bob’s lonely feeling. Audience maybe thinks why put this scene here, to cause he more and more annoyance. Usually, although he is a star, he also has many stresses. Such as this message that Bob readied, put on began of this movie hint of later development in a story.
Shot3 :

Shot Type: medium shot

Camera angle: Then the camera becomes medium shot.

Character Proteomics: There is more than one character. Their relationship to each other within the frame. Express with their greet to each other. They are much closed. Their body language used to communicate a message to us. Express with Bow and Handshake.

Depth of Field:
Bob just follow the hotel waiter, He pretended to be pleased, and accepted gift walk to his room. Since he read that massage from his wife, he gets to cause annoyance. Even thouth he is artist and super star ,he also have lots of pressure and troboule from media and family
Cheerful expression was compare with Bob’s tired eyes, in this scene, there is not close shot to his face, but we can saw the whole shot of Bob and the other people compare with him.

Shot 4:

Lighting: The lighting in this shot is very low key. In the beginning of the shot, the business man is soft light with no clear motivation. As he moves, he steps out from elevator the light is no change and it is very nature.
Camera angle: the camera angle is even close to his back level.
Sounds: While he was passing with the crowed in hotel road, haven’t some sounds effect, however, maybe in Bob’s heart have a song named “tired”.
Depth of Field: Began the camera follow Bob’s back, this scene we think about Sofia Coppola make a question about this medium shot, bob accepted gift from hotel service, then he didn’t open it, over wise he walk fast, as we know, this is just a beginning of this lonely journey. What is the modern and fashion hotel in Tokyo. The bustling cities and his mood contrast it. The mysterious city, he was so tired. The lens for night he was about this long and lonely travelling.

Shot 5:

Sound: At the beginning, it is very quite. And with one moment elevator bell sounds. Is the sound diabetic with characters talking? The music had a steady atmosphere. Also, this part still with sounds.
Color Usage: The colors are very neutral and downplayed in this shot.

Depth of Field: This is the last scene in this case; waiter pushed his package and follow Bob. Bob just want to get a room and have a good rest, he don’t care about his package or gifts.
