Scene Analysis
Director : Sofia Coppola


Scene overview:
In the studio for make Suntory whisky commercial. Japanese Director who not speaks in English is explaining what he wants to be on scene and a Japanese woman interpreter who is either unable or unwilling to translate everything the director is rattling on about for Bob (Main Actor). Because of lost translation make Bob goes on the set and tries to understand the director through a demure interpreter.

Mise-en-scene:
This scene is set as activity in the studio which have many Japanese crew such as Director who wearing sun glasses, Japanese interpreter and etc. For make a whisky commercial advertisement. The scene set as European style bar with crystal glass of whisky. Bob who is main character is wearing shawl collared tuxedo who hold crystal glass and drink the whisky then say the slogan ”For relaxing time, make it Suntory time”

Color:
Normal color with blue in studio. Soft and warm color in sequence of whisky commercial.

Sound:
Use diagetic sound which talk between Characters

Music:
No music in this scene

Dialog:
3 people in conversation involve.
1. Director is rattling speak to quick explain how the concept and atmosphere in the whisky commercial scene.
2. Interpreter coordinate outfit translate to Bob which is not clear.
3. And Bob, Main character is listening and tries to catch up words then ask questions to repeat his understand.

Contrast Area:
In the studio, background look bright, clear and feel like in Japan and Japanese studio atmosphere contrast with the set up scene of whisky commercial which look soft and warm to make a feel for relax and feel like European style.

Normal setting light in the scene as studio and warm and spot light at set up scene of whisky commercial

Editing:
Time: 30 second

Editing Style:
It is a short sequence to show what the director explain and jump cut to Bob then pan to how the translator translate to main actor and the feeling express by face of main character.

There transitions between the shots for a reason to show what happen and like they are making advertise of whisky commercial in Japanese studio

Character analysis

Character relationship (proxemics):
The Director explain want he want and atmosphere around for whisky commercial to Japanese interpreter coordinate to translation for Bob and he is a actor who play the scene dialog in whisky commercial.

Character movement: 3 characters movement
1. Director move left, right and turn around within the shot.
2. Interpreter move forward to Bob.
3. Bob is sitting on the chair, move his head and show face expression

Deconstructed
This s cene is expressing another side of lost in translation. There are the different place and also different language to understand. The plot in Lost in translation like culture shock phases. They are like a fish without water.
The main slogan for the whisky had hit.
