Scene Analysis

1. Scene Overview:

Memento about a short-term memory loss patients who Lenny's story, he could only remember what happened a few minutes ago. The only goal of his life is to revenge the killing of his wife's murderer. However, the fragmented memory so that L in serious difficulties, he could only small things with bits and pieces, such as tattoos, Polaroid snapshots to recall the dots, and, whenever he found some valuable clues, he must use all methods of record immediately, because it may be 10 minutes later, he could not remember where you are, what to do.

In the course of the investigation, he met Natalie and claiming to be his friend Teddy. The lies and the real memory, Lenny chooses to believe their own handwriting recorded in the photograph, kill the Teddy.
The whole story follows the black and white and color to tell the story of two main lines of development. Black and white thread is the development of the order to tell the story. Color is the main line is to tell the story of flashback.

According to the different characters and locations, story ideas can be broken down into five lines.
   1 colored: Teddy, Natalie, Lenny, Dodd, Hotel Manager, Fake wife
   2 Black / white: Lenny, Jimmy
   3 Black / white: Sammy, Sammy’s wife, Lenny
   4 Colored: Lenny, Lenny's wife
   5 Colored: Sammy, Lenny

This scene in which we will explore is that how Lenny decision and kill Teddy.

Setting:  Inside the old factory.

Why use this setting?
He followed his own set of clues to lost memory Teddy prior to his plan to kill the location. This place is the same one he kill Dodd.

Props: Gun, photo.

Why use these props?
Lenny is suffering from an unusual memory condition. He can’t create new memory. This is why he always takes photos and writes down his mind under the photos. In this scene, he needs follow the photo which is he took for Teddy, and kills Teddy.

2. Shot analysis:
Shot 1: 00:05:07-00:05:19

Shot Size:  This is a medium shot cut to close up of the photo in Lenny's hand.


Sound:  The sound in this shot is his footsteps into the room and breathing sounds, and he took photos, created a tense atmosphere and the room felt empty. Lenny is looking at photos of his handwriting, and his inner voice.

Contrast Dominants:  Lenny wear light-colored suit, this suit in the whole movie series in several parts of the story will be Jimmy, Lenny, Natalie linked, and this suit has a very important role. In this scene, set indoor background of dark suits and light contrast to a more prominent role.
Character Movement: Leonard stands in the dimly-lit, decaying former hallway. He pulls a stack of POLAROID PHOTOGRAPHS out of his pocket and leafs through them as Teddy starts walking towards him. Leonard finds a photo showing Teddy with a shit-eating grin standing in front of the pickup truck. Leonard flips the photo over.


Character Proxemics:  Lenny is facing directly towards camera throughout the entire shot. There is a shot close up to the photo. It is a kind of character's eye level.

Camera Movement:  In this shot, director cut to close up from a middle shot. To show the movement of Lenny sight, watching the photo information.

Camera Angle:The camera angle is steady throughout the shot and is eye level and came back to middle angle.

Lens Used:  I believe in this shot, director to the performance of Lenny's thinking, his first photograph in accordance with their own handwriting to determine the relationship with Teddy and to determine next steps. The focus is the eye level; we can see Lenny's behavior.

Depth of Field:  As the scene is in the house, so the main focus of the shot is character-Lenny.

Lighting:  The lighting for this shot is a little bit dark. Because this shot is inside the room, and in this scene Lenny plan kill Teddy, so director make this scene more dark than general.

Color Usage:  Because the setting is inside the old factory, the director use the dark color is main color, and the story gradually into the tense atmosphere. But Lenny and Teddy all wear the light color clothes, make the roles clearer.

Screen Graphics / Composition:  There are no strong geometric patterns, just a simple camera switch. Our eyes follow the movement of Lenny's eyes. This is a very simple middle shot cut to close up.

Editing Style:It is a straight cut.

Time:  This is a time line sequence, the two have entered from the interior, Lenny knows Teddy according to the identity leads to the two dispute, then shot and killed Lenny Teddy, time points are consistent and orderly.
Subtext:  All the information that we gather from this scene comes together to portray that the character try to remember the relationship between him and Teddy, according to their own handwriting the next step of action.

Shot 2: 00:05:19-00:05:40


Shot Size:  This is a medium shot cut to close up of the gun in Lenny's hand and cut to a medium shot too.

Sound:  The sound in this shot is Teddy entered the room ask Lenny left. Lenny hit his head turned to the voice, and Lenny lines “YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU DID! YOU BEG FORGIVENESS, AND THEN YOU PAY!” Teddy is down.
Character Movement:  Leonard stuffs the Polaroid back into his pocket, reaches around to the back of his waistband and draws a HANDGUN, keeping it out of Teddy’s line of sight. When Teddy turned back over Lenny, Lenny turned to attack from the Teddy behind his head with rifle butts. Teddy is down. Leonard drags him back, deeper into the dark house. Leonard is in frenzy. He dumps Teddy at the end of the hall and stands over him.
Character Proxemics:Lenny is facing directly towards camera throughout the entire shot. There is a shot close up to the gun in Lenny’s hand. It is a kind of character's eye level. Later the shot is changed that Teddy is facing directly towards camera throughout the entire shot.
Camera Movement:  In this shot, director cut to close up from a middle shot, to show the movement of Lenny sight. And in two different Middle shot each other switch.
Camera Angle:The camera angle is steady throughout the shot and is eye level and came back to middle angle.
Lens Used:  In this shot, director to the performance of Lenny's movement, the focus is the eye level. Then switch the shot to further describe how the behavior of Lenny.

Screen Graphics / Composition:  Our eyes follow the movement of Lenny's eyes. When Lenny attack Teddy, the lens from the Lenny and Teddy of the middle shot each switch.

Shot Size:  This is switch between over the shoulder shots.


Sound:  Dialogue between Lenny and Teddy, and Teddy’s struggling business, as well as gunfire.
Contrast Dominants:  Lenny wear light-colored suit, this suit in the whole movie series in several parts of the story will be Jimmy, Lenny, Natalie linked, and this suit has a very important role. In this scene, set indoor background of dark suits and light contrast to a more prominent role. Teddy spits blood.
Character Movement:  Lenny held the gun to Teddy’s head, live from the suppression of his actions.
Character Proxemics: This shot from a different perspective of Lenny and Teddy to show their ongoing dialogue. When at last Lenny kill Teddy, Teddy had turned back to escape the action.
Camera Movement:  In this shot, director switches between over the shoulder shots.
Camera Angle: The camera angle is high angle from Lenny and low angle from Teddy.
Lens Used:  In this shot, director to the performance of Conversation between Lenny and Teddy. Director used to switch between two different angles to show the process of dialogue and reflection in the expression of both routes.
Lighting:  Because of Lenny behind the glass window, he is backlit, so his image a little darker, giving psychological pressure and fear, and Teddy face bright as can be seen more clearly in the face of the subtle changes in his performance of his mental situation.
