SCENE ANALYSIS

Lost in Translation
Sofia Coppola
Montage taken from Scene 26(p28)

1. Scene Overview
Bob Harris is an American film actor, far past his prime. He visits Tokyo to appear in commercials, and he meets Charlotte, the young wife of a visiting photographer. Bored and weary, Bob and Charlotte make ideal if improbable traveling companions.

The scene is Bob and Charlotte first talk to each other. They sat down to chat at the bar, before they just had eye contact. Hero and heroine's life began to change on this conversation. This conversation is the most important dialogue from the opening.

2. Shoot Analysis

1 minute

Sound:
The sound in this shot is soft music and some bar’s background sound. The music sound very small.

Character Relationship:
Charlotte and Bob, they just live in the same hotel and they both cannot sleep. They never saw each other before they came to Tokyo. They sat in the bar where in the hotel. There has a spot between Charlotte and Bob. Charlotte turned to the side spoke to Bob while taken a cigarette.

Character Movement:
Charlotte and Bob sit in the bar and the background is the night view of Tokyo. They never change scene.

Camera Movement:
The camera is medium shot and keep in front fixed lens. This movement is necessary in order to keep the focus of the shoot on the movement of their conversation.

Camera Angle:
The angle of the camera is at an even eye level.

Depth of field:
This is a shallow focus only because hero and heroine is the main focus of the shot. The background is the night view of the Tokyo.

Lighting:
The light is very soft and dusk because they are in the bar. Director wants to focus on hero and heroine, so you can see the lights in front of their head and behind their lights a little dark.

Color used:
The colors are a little cold. The colors are very important in this shot because this is a night and the background is the night view. Even though, we can see some warm lights in front of the hero and heroine, overall colors still looks cold.

Screen graphics/composition:
This shot is very simple. Our eyes just focus on Bob and Charlotte.

Dialogue:
This dialogue is first time they talk. This dialogue is a turning point in the film, because this is the first contact, before they just have eye contact. Because of this point, there is future development of the plot. This scene shot nearly four minutes

Translations:
The shot type is Medium shot. No translation in here. Because dialogue is the key, Director wanted the audience focus on the dialogue.
