Sequence1
Duration: 00:40:07—00:40:16
Shot 1: 00:40:07—00:40:10
CU; Trip’s face is clear in focus.
Shot 2: 00:40:11—00:40:14
M; only Lux’s back is in focus, students around are not clear.
Shot 3: 00:40:14—00:40:16
CU; Trip’s walking close to us and then off-screen towards Lux
Mise-en-scene: interior, cinema setting, Trip, Trip’s white necklace, red EXIT sign, cinema door shuts, Lux is sitting in the crowd of other students.
Colour: the colour in this sequence is dark since its taken place in the cinema. I think the colour symbolises Trip’s mind—he tries to find Lux in the crowed and he wants to talk to her. It is kind like propose. So he is shy, as hiding himself in the darkness, but now ready to walk out.
Contrasting areas: here Lux’s golden blond hair is a great contrast in the darkness. Her hairs are extremely bright under the light. Obviously, this is from Trip’s perspective—Lux is the only girl in his eyes.
Sound: the sound here is diagetic. It comes from the movie which is playing in the background. It is a scientific documentary.
Music: the music also comes from the movie. It is intense. It gives the intension to audiences as well as Trip.
Lighting: dark in this sequence except when it shows Lux’s back. The Lighting focuses on her beautiful hairs.
Character relationship: within this sequence, Trip and Lux are physically apart. Trip is staring at Lux’s back shows how he likes her.
Character movements: Trip moves closer to the camera. It is also a magnificent meaningful movement in the whole movie. He takes a deep breath. We can see how nervous he is. Then he walks off-screen towards Lux.
Editing style: this sequence has two shots. One is on Trip, another one is on Lux. This is to show the main characters evolve in this sequence and how they are physically located, so audiences will have better understanding of what’s going on later.
Transitions: it is regular jump-cut between these two shots. When the audiences see where Lux is, camera jumps back on Trip.
Sequence 2
Duration: 00:40:17—00:41:08
M; camera stays focus on Lux and Trip; other students are only seen as background. This sequence is one step further than the one previously. Trip sits next to Lux which builds audiences suspension that something is going to happen between them.
Mise-en-scene: interior, cinema setting, Lux, Trip and other students.
Colour: colour is still dark. This is like an event going to happen secretly. Students’ uniforms are all clean and white, which symbolises the relationship between Lux and Trip is innocent at the time.
Contrasting areas: Lux is the only girl we can see from this sequence who wears vest, which makes her look even special.
Sound: the documentary movie continues. Very interesting is what in the movie. the man is talking about how storm forms. He keeps talking about how two masses meet and create the massive storm. It can be thought as how two people meet and get to get together later. It is like a hint for these two shy teenagers.
Music: suspense music becomes more intense when the background movie reaches its climax.
Lighting: the only light comes from the movie that we can’t see but can only hear. It creates some shadows occasionally. By this chance, we can see characters’ expressions change slightly. When they smile to each other, we can imagine their faces flush immediately. This is the point the shadow appear so they are “covered”.
Character relationships: at this point, Lux shows she likes Trip a bit since she acts totally different when Trip sits next to her and she can’t help smiling. Lux’s hiding her emotion so it doesn’t show she is “cheap”.
Character movements: Lux sits higher and put her hands down when she realises Trip’s sitting next to her. Trip puts his fingers next to his mouth. He puts his hand down and sits lower so he is at the same level with Lux. They turn to look at each other which feel like greetings without speaking. Lux then rests her hand on the chair handle. Trip lowers his head and looks at it and then put his hand down next to hers. The whole set of movement reflects teenagers’ psychology. They feel fidget when they are close to someone they like and moves a lot in order to get closer but without too much attention. Every tiny movement takes a lot of their mind.
Total composition: the whole sequence shows their relationship is so not clear at this stage. It looks like they both like each other, but all at the stage of “discovering” each other’s mind and afraid to move too fast.
Sequence 3
Duration: 00:41:09—00:41:24
POV; the camera moves up to Trip’s face after a disgusting sound. It is a PU shot.
Total composition: it is designed to build suspense to audiences that Trip and Lux are going to hold each other’s hand. Someone fart at the back creates a dramatic change at the most intensive point.
Mise-en-scene: interior, Lux’s hand. She has two rings and wears nail polish. She is living beautifully at the time. We can also see Trip’s hand. From their shirt type, it might be warm in the cinema.
Colour: colour is extremely dark in this sequence because it builds the feeling that holding each other’s hand is like an event happen “under ground”. That is how the director conveys the idea how sweet and “untouchable” their love is at the beginning, so it builds to lead the turning point later.
Sound: the documentary sound goes on at the background. The content of this documentary is getting strong, and all of a sudden, some one’s fart breaks the extremely killing nervous air. Though it is disgusting, the funny contrast is the only but smart way to end this shot.
Music: same music as above, but delicately designed to stop for a moment when the disgusting noise appear. This makes us escape from the nervous we had previously.
Character movements: Trip and Lux’s hands are slowly got together and just about to touch slightly. After they hear the fart, Lux takes her hand quickly back. Trip’s hand stays on air longer as if he still has no idea what’s happened.
Sequence 4
Duration: 00:41:25—00:41:57
CU; camera strongly focuses on their faces.
Total composition: they eventually communicate with each other. This is a step further than their relationship in the last sequence. This is like a normal talk goes go between two people, so it is designed to feel relax.
Mise-en-scene: interior, cinema setting, during the movie, Lux, Trip (they have their accessories on) and the students sitting behind them.
Colour: white, grey, their hair colours and dark background.
Sound: diagetic, two characters are talking, so the movie documentary goes very blur as the background.
Music: the music still comes from the movie playing at the back. It is not as strong as before. It fades away when this sequence stops.
Dialogue: Trip and Lux are talking.
Charactor relationship: after reveal Trip’s plan, their relationship becomes closer because Lux doesn’t say no, instead, she smiles which means he is accepted.
Charactor movements: Trip moves a lot with his head. Whenever he talks, he turns to Lux. It shows how he cares about her. In the contrary, Lux doesn’t move her head at all. she talks without turning to Trip, so she is still holding her pride and of course she is shy.
Editing style: this editing is completed by several shots taken when each of the characters talks. Jump-cuts are used when one finishes his/her talk, and the other one’s face appear and continues talking.
Sequence 5
Duration: 00:41:58—00:42:18
CU; PR & PU when Trip leaves his sit and comes back whisper to Lux; camera focuses on Lux’s face.
Total composition: Trip moves his head in and off- screen remind us of he is sneaky all the time and he knows how to make girls like him. But also, his back shows his admiration towards Lux.
Mise-en-scene: interior, cinema setting, the movie playing at the background almost finish, Trip, other students and Lux is crewing a gum
Sound: diagetic, Trip is whispering to Lux while the background movie explanation goes on. Lux feels relief so she sighs. Students applaud. I think this applaud adds more pride to Lux after she hears what Trip has told her.
Music: as the movie at the background ends, it plays loud, excited and relief music, just matches characters’ mood.
Dialogue: Trip’s dialogue takes place here. This is the most remarkable dialogue in the entire movie and also in Lux’s life. She is prised extremely high by Trip.
Lighting: this sequence is lit up by the cinema lighting still, but the focus is on Lux’s face, Trip’s face is in shadow as we only want to know how Lux reacts after she heard such beautiful worlds come from Trip’s mouth. The lighting goes off as the movie ends. There is no light reflection on Lux’s face, so it ends the sequence naturally.
Charactor movements: Trip comes back and gets his head close to Lux’s ear. Lux raised her shoulder and smile after she heard what Trip’s said. Lux keeps chewing the gum and follows other students to applaud as the movie ends to pretend that nothing has happened and she doesn’t care. Actually she almost screams happily.
Deconstructed meaning:
The 5 sequence makes up the whole scene. This scene is vitally important in the movie since it is the real “beginning “of Trip and Lux’s relationship. Though Trip’s passion for Lux has began long time ago, he is not the pursue type of person. Only after his family has told him what to do, he got over the confusion and starts communicating with Lux. Everything he does will make huge impression to Lux because it’s the first time. It is a very subtle scene that two of them are trying very carefully to “test” each other’s attitude. After the playground night, Trip never talks to Lux, but she always remembers he said” you are a stone fire”. That is a sentence lit her up in her short life after her sister died. Right when she builds the trust and gives her-self in to Trip, Trip’s gone. It broke her heart and hope again. If everything is not as perfect at the beginning, she might not fall in love with Trip that deeply.
