Memento is a thriller action movie which the story tells about one man who got a memory problem (short term memory lost) and wants to do the revenge for his wife death. Not like another Christopher Nolan movie before, which is following. In this movie, Nolan as a writer and also director, tries to make it more interesting by put two different colors in this movie, black and white and color in where this two colors have different story line.

            The scene in which we will explore is when the main character named Lenny entered the bar in where he tries to find someone named Natalie.

 Bar table, beer, beer machine,  bar chair, bottles of wine, beer glass, bar lamp, coaster.

Dark colour more dominant. Brown and a blue from bar lamp mostly appear in this scene. This colour is used to make the bar and mysterious atmosphere more lively felt. The blue couch and the shirt that Lenny wear seems used to remind audience about Jimmy clothes which is Lenny token by murdered him and how Jimmy relation with Natalie as her boyfriend is.

The sound types is diagetic. When Lenny entered the bar, the back sound music and the sound from bar table (Natalie prepare the beer for the customer) and Lenny footsteps sound comes together, and later after Lenny talking with Natalie the back sound music slowly become disappear. This is used to let audience know how the situation at that time is and what kind of a bar in where Natalie works. The music disappear slowly to make the dialogue clearly and how’s each character voice tone when their talk each other. This is important because this can make audience feel and guessing about how the character itself.

There’s a background music when Lenny appear in this scene. The music writer assumed that is not popular music. The back sound music in this scene doesn’t clearly enough especially when the character start talking. The music just used again, just for showing the bar atmosphere. The mood that sets with this music is a mysterious feeling. When Lenny entered the bar this music starts played and make audience feel more curious about what Lenny want to do and how’s Natalie mysterious movement.

There is a dialogue in this scene between Lenny and Natalie. The dialogue focus on how’s Natalie find out more about Lenny condition and the conversation between them was running so fast.

Contrasting areas:

The foreground in this scene more contrast than the background. We can see when Lenny takes a seat in bar chair. In here we can see the clothes that Lenny wear is really contras with the background which is darker than his clothes.

this scene taken in inside bar and used interior lighting and artificial light. It can be shown from the blue bar lamp.

In this scene, there are two characters. Lenny and Natalie, their relationship is create after Lenny come to the bar and Natalie asking some question which is about her boyfriend Jimmy, and how Natalie found about Lenny condition. In here they seem still apart. Their relationship is not to close each other. Natalie body language wants to deliver message to the audience about how’s she curious, tricky, but sympathy about Lenny condition as well. Lenny body language shows the message that he is totally confused about what happened and show how he is in the complicated and confusing situation.

The character moved within the frame of the shot

Some frame used short sequence. This is used to show the conversation more clear between this two character, to make audience more clearly about character expression and their body language in each frame.  Some part is used long sequence to show how’s the condition around the character and how’s the setting look, so does the audience could realize where this scene taken.

In this scene, regular jump cuts is used. Jump-cut, because the main character did some dialogues with another character in this scene. This transition used to show audience the character expression in each frame.

in this scene, the director used mix of shot type. There is four of shots types which is mostly used by the director in each scene along this 4 min scene, Long shot (when Lenny entered the bar) used to show the condition of the bar, Close up (when the dialog taken)used to show each expression that Lenny and Natalie did, extreme close up (when it shot the beer glass) used to show and make some attention for the beer glass that Natalie has been doing something bad before by mix the beer with the spit, medium shot(when Natalie give the beer glass to the old customer for spitting) to show the character body language. 

Most of it straight on but when Lenny entered the bar, the director used over the shoulder to show how’s Natalie reaction when Lenny come but still show Lenny body language from the back at the same time.

Camera movement:

Zoom in and follow the character, used when Lenny entered the bar.

Most of it the background not dominant. The focus is in the character itself.

The whole composition look to show how is Natalie character. In this scene audience can see that Natalie like a tricky, tough, but still got some sympathy about Lenny condition as well.

This scene shows how Lenny try to find out who is Natalie and later we can find out how’s Lenny, Jimmy and Natalie related together from the dialog in this scene, but also we can figure out how’s Natalie character and how’s Lenny and Natalie relationship started.
